The Avatar: The Last Airbender fighting game arrived on most platforms on July 23, but Xbox players were told to wait until September just hours before launch, and Switch shipped stripped down.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game was supposed to be a clean, everywhere-at-once launch on July 23, 2026. Instead it became a lesson in how uneven a modern multiplatform release can get. The PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC (Steam) versions all went live as planned. The Xbox Series X and S version did not. Roughly half a day before it was meant to unlock, the publisher announced the Xbox build was slipping to September 3, more than six weeks later.
That is the story here, and it is not really about the game itself, which we have not played and are not judging. It is about the fact that on launch day the answer to a simple question, can I buy this and play it, depended entirely on which box you own.
What launched, and what got held back
The game is a two-dimensional fighter built on the Avatar: The Last Airbender license, developed by Gameplay Group International and published by PM Studios and Skydance Games. It carries a 30 dollar price tag and a roster drawn from the show and its spinoffs, with recent trailers spotlighting fighters like Aang, Zuko, Azula, Korra, Kyoshi, and Zaheer.
The Xbox delay was blamed on what the publisher described as unforeseen circumstances tied to a backend feature. No further detail was given, and reporting from outlets that cover the fighting game scene noted the announcement landed only a handful of hours before the original launch time. Existing Xbox pre-orders stay active rather than being cancelled, and the new date is September 3, but for anyone who cleared their calendar for launch day on an Xbox, the practical result was the same: nothing to play.
The Switch version came up short too
The Xbox slip grabbed the headlines, but the original Nintendo Switch release shipped with its own asterisks. On that platform the game launched as the Standard Edition only, with no Deluxe Edition upgrade available at launch, no crossplay with other systems, and English-only text, meaning the other localizations players expected were not there on day one.
The publisher said it is committed to bringing crossplay, the additional languages, and the Deluxe Edition to Switch as soon as possible, but attached no timeline. The Switch 2 version, notably, was not subject to those limits. For a competitive game, crossplay is not a nice-to-have extra. It decides how quickly you find a match and how healthy the online population feels, and launching without it on one platform splits an already-new player base before it has a chance to settle.
Why it matters
Fighting games live and die on their opening weeks. That is when the community forms, when players decide whether the netcode is trustworthy, and when the online lobbies are busiest. A launch that arrives whole on some platforms and broken up across others starts that clock unevenly, and it hands the people who waited a worse first impression than the ones who did not.
The timing is the part that stings. A delay announced weeks out is a scheduling note. A delay announced hours before the clock hits zero, after people have pre-loaded and blocked out the evening, reads as a certification problem that ran out of runway. Publishers rarely spell out what a backend feature actually means, and we are not going to pretend to know the internals here. What is clear is the shape of it: Avatar Legends is out in the world on most platforms, Xbox owners are waiting until September, and Switch players got a version with pieces still missing. Whether the fighting underneath is any good is a question for another day. Right now the game is a case study in how many different launches a single release date can actually contain.
