Xbox Is Bringing 25 Games to gamescom, and This Time You Get to Hold the Controller

The playable list is broad. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Minecraft Dungeons II, Stranger Than Heaven, and Metro 2039 are all set to be hands-on, alongside recently released titles like Halo: Campaign Evolved. Forza Horizon 6 will be there with a new Drift Attack feature, and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is running a National Championship Air Races demo. The booth also folds in a stretch of other titles, including Alien: Isolation 2, so the lineup is not just the marquee names.

Xbox is pairing the booth with live broadcasts from the show floor on August 26 and 27, streamed on Twitch and YouTube, promising gameplay, developer interviews, trailers, and guests. There is also an Xbox FanFest on August 26. The framing throughout is a celebration of 25 years of Xbox, which gives the whole appearance a slightly anniversary-flavored tone.

The one notable exception to the hands-on theme is Fable. Rather than a public demo station, Playground Games is getting a dedicated live demo theater presentation, showing gameplay that Xbox describes as taking fans on a Hero's journey and highlighting smooth and responsive combat. That is a controlled reveal, not a controller in your hand, and the distinction is worth reading honestly: a theater showing is how you present a game you want seen but not yet poked at by a crowd.

After the long road Fable has traveled since its 2020 announcement, a live gameplay presentation is still a meaningful step. It just is not the same commitment as putting the game on a kiosk and walking away, which is exactly what E-Day is getting.

gamescom is where a platform holder proves its calendar is real. Xbox spent much of the last two years answering questions about hardware and about which of its games would land on rival consoles, and the counter to that noise is not another trailer, it is a line of people playing the games. A public Gears campaign demo, a Fable theater showing, and Forza, Flight Sim, and Call of Duty on kiosks is Xbox trying to turn a slate of announcements into something you can touch.

None of this is a verdict. We have not played any of these builds, and a demo tuned for a show floor is not the finished game. But the shape of the appearance tells you where Xbox thinks it is: E-Day close enough to launch to let strangers play the campaign, Fable close enough to show but not yet share. gamescom Opening Night Live kicks off the wider show on August 25, and Xbox's own floor days follow right after.
