Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on Friday, October 23, 2026. Developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision, it is the fourth and final entry in the rebooted Modern Warfare sub-series, and it arrives on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. There is no PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version this time, a clean break from the last console generation.
The game ships as three distinct modes rolled into one package: a single-player campaign, the competitive 6v6 multiplayer the series is built on, and DMZ, the extraction mode returning as a headline feature rather than a side experiment. For a lot of players, that third one is the real headline.
DMZ is back, and it is the pitch this time
DMZ first appeared as a mode bolted onto Warzone, and it built a devoted following before Activision largely left it behind. Modern Warfare 4 brings it back as a full feature, exclusive to this game, where you deploy onto a large map called Hajin, scavenge for gear and intel, and try to extract before rival squads or AI forces wipe you out. Publisher messaging frames it as a fully realized extraction experience built for both newcomers and veterans, which is a notably bigger commitment than the mode got the first time.
Activision has leaned into the launch cadence to build momentum. Buyers of the premium edition got Campaign early access starting October 16, and DMZ opened early on October 20 ahead of the full October 23 release, so the extraction crowd has already been deploying to Hajin for days before the rest of the game goes live.
What else is in the box
On the multiplayer side, Modern Warfare 4 launches with 12 core 6v6 maps set in distinct locations, alongside dedicated Gunfight maps for the series' tense 2v2 duels and larger Big War maps built around vehicles and infantry at scale. It is a substantial day-one map count by the standards of recent entries.
The Warzone connection continues too. Beginning with Season 1, which arrives shortly after launch, Call of Duty: Warzone will fold in Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression, keeping the two games tied together as one ongoing ecosystem the way recent Call of Duty years have worked.
Why it matters
Call of Duty launches are their own genre of event, but the interesting wrinkle here is DMZ. Extraction shooters have become one of the most talked-about corners of the genre, and bringing DMZ back as a core pillar is Activision betting that the mode's cult following was a signal, not a fluke. If it lands, it reshapes what a yearly Call of Duty is expected to include.
It is also a send-off. This is billed as the final chapter of the rebooted Modern Warfare arc that started in 2019, so Friday is both a launch and a bookend. If you want the competitive shooter conversation this winter, this is where a large share of it is about to happen. For the other big multiplayer shooters in the mix, we have reviewed both Battlefield 6 and Borderlands 4, and the contrast in what each is chasing has rarely been sharper.
