Ubisoft has brought Eric Baptizat back into the fold, and it handed him one of the most important seats in the company. On August 5, Assassin's Creed head of content Jean Guesdon confirmed on LinkedIn that Baptizat has returned to Ubisoft as game director for the Assassin's Creed brand. If the name does not immediately land, his resume will: he is the person who directed Assassin's Creed Valhalla, one of the biggest entries the series has ever launched.
A career built almost entirely on Assassin's Creed
Baptizat is not a fresh hire learning the ropes. He joined Ubisoft in 2005 and spent roughly 16 years there, climbing through the exact games that shaped modern Assassin's Creed. He was lead game designer on Black Flag, a senior designer on Unity, the project lead for game design on Origins, and finally the game director on Valhalla in 2020. He then left for EA's Motive Studio, where he directed the well received Dead Space remake before working on the studio's Battlefield efforts. Bringing that specific person back to guide the whole brand is a clear signal about the kind of Assassin's Creed Ubisoft wants next.
Why it matters
This arrives at a delicate moment for both Ubisoft and the series. The publisher has spent the past couple of years restructuring, and it has leaned on returning veterans to stabilize its biggest franchise rather than betting everything on new faces. Assassin's Creed itself is in a transitional stretch: the most recent full entry was 2025's Assassin's Creed Shadows, which we reviewed, and the newest release is Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, a remake of the very game Baptizat helped design more than a decade ago, which we also covered.
A brand game director sits above any single project, shaping the overall direction and consistency of the series. Handing that seat to someone with Baptizat's track record suggests Ubisoft wants a steadier, more cohesive vision after a run of mixed reactions. Nothing about a new game was announced here, and there is no release date to circle. What changed today is who is holding the wheel, and for a franchise this size, that is the kind of behind the scenes move that tends to show up in the games a few years down the line.
