2D Metroid Is Back: Metroid Ravenous Lands on Switch 2 in January

Details are deliberately thin this early. Nintendo billed it as a new 2D adventure with new powers, and confirmed it will have its own amiibo and a special edition alongside the standard release. The studio behind it was not named on stage. Metroid Dread, the last new 2D entry from 2021, was made by MercurySteam, and many expect the same team here, but until Nintendo says so that is an assumption rather than a fact, and we will treat it as one.

Metroid Dread proved there is a real appetite for new 2D Metroid, not just remasters, and Ravenous is Nintendo answering that with a fresh entry rather than a re-release. It also gives Switch 2 a marquee first-party exclusive early in 2027, separate from the ongoing Metroid Prime 4 thread. A January date means the wait is short, and the honest read is that the reveal is exciting precisely because 2D Metroid is rare. The test will be whether Ravenous pushes the formula or simply revisits it, and that is a question for hands-on time, not a trailer.
